Not Today
Not Today
(Graphic Design + UX Research + Communication Strategy)
I designed a safety campaign to reduce accidents that would foster a mill-wide culture of open communication about workplace hazards.
A key objective of this campaign was to bridge generational divides between junior and senior millwrights, steelworkers, and staff. Because of this, I conducted research to understand if and how these divides get crossed in other instances.
I was the sole designer for the campaign and worked with the whole safety department to plan the launch event.
Key Findings From Research
I conducted interviews and observed departmental meetings. I learned that the generational divide was caused by years of slow hiring between 2004 and 2012. I also learned that both sides of this divide felt they had little in common other than work related inside jokes.
I explored the mill and observed the locations that signage and information is posted. Some spaces in the mill do not have walls or surfaces appropriate for hanging signs. One space that is in all parts of the mill is the hard hat of workers.
The “Not Today” Campaign
I designed ‘caution signs’ that cautioned workers the way that they wanted to be. These signs had images of accidents that could be prevented with vigilance and care. As well as producing full sized metal and plastic signs, we made them into 38 decals that could be placed on hard hats and other objects. I later used these images and the slogan to create banners and sequential signs that were placed at entrances to the mill.
